Alexander W. Evans
(17 May 1868 - 6 December 1959)

Information compiled July 2007 by Gary Perlmutter,
Certificate in Native Plant Studies, North Carolina Botanical Garden

The University of North Carolina Herbarium has catalogued approximately 50 specimens of the lichen genus Cladonia collected by A.W. Evans, who specialized in this taxon. To date we have only catalogued specimens from the Piedmont of North Carolina, but specimens from other parts of the state as well as elsewhere in the eastern United States lie in the older collection (pre-2000) as surveyed by NCBG student Gary Perlmutter in 2005. As the older lichen collection is databased, surely more specimens by Dr. Evans will be found.

It is also important to note that some of the NCU collection is referenced in one of his publications on the genus (Evans 1947), which also includes the first description of the federally endangered Rock Gnome Lichen, Cetradonia linearis (= Gymnoderma lineare, Cladonia linearis) of the high elevation mountains of the southern Appalachians.

See "Alexander W. Evans and Lichenology" by Mason E. Hale, Jr. for a review of Evans' contributions to lichenology.

See "Alexander W. Evans: An Appreciation" by Rudolf M. Schuster for a review of Evan's contributions to the study of liverworts.

See "Personal reflections on Alexander W. Evans" by Lewis E. Anderson for interesting details about Evans' collecting in the Carolinas, as well as a photo of Evans and A. J. Grout (below).
